Four places to be on Fourth

The South Shore has Fourth of July events times four again this year. Bay View, Cudahy, St. Francis and South Milwaukee will celebrate with various events that include high-profile parades early on July 4 and, of course, traditional fireworks once the sun goes down.

The following is a summary of events at each locale. 

Bay View

The Humboldt Park 4th of July Association has organized a day-long event.

The 9 a.m. parade begins at Kinnickinnic and Lincoln avenues and ends at Humboldt Park, 3000 S. Howell Ave., where a half-hour clown show begins at 10:30 a.m. (near the tennis courts) and an old-time 1860s-style baseball game will begin at 11 a.m. (at Keitner Field).

Other than the 9:15 p.m. fireworks, the remainder of the day is filled with children's games, an afternoon children's bike-and-buggy parade, live music and contests.

Cudahy

Kicking off with a noon parade, Cudahy's "Spirit of America" celebration on July 4 includes a variety of activities.

The 80-unit parade, which the city bills as one of the longest in the area, begins at Packard and Grange avenues and proceeds north on Packard to Layton Avenue, then east on Layton to Lake Drive.

A flag-raising ceremony takes place at 1:45 p.m. on the main stage in Sheridan Park, 4800 S. Lake Drive, where other events, including dance teams, live music and magic shows, begin at 2 p.m. Fireworks begin at 9:20 p.m.

St. Francis

Local businesses sponsor a day of July 4 events.

The 10 a.m. parade - which heads south on Barland Avenue, east on Denton Avenue, south on Lunham Avenue and east to Milton Vretenar Municipal Park, 4224 S. Kirkwood St. - will be preceded by a bike, trike and wagon contest.

Events at the park include a flag-raising ceremony at 11:15 a.m., pony rides and a petting zoo from noon to 6 p.m., a horseshoe tournament at 12:30 p.m. and music from 6 to 9:15 p.m., when the fireworks begin.

South Milwaukee

Following a brief "Call to Colors" ceremony at 10 a.m., events begin with a children's bicycle and coaster parade.

Activities - in areas 5 and 6 at Grant Park, 100 E. Hawthorne Ave. - include children's games.

Food will be served by the South Milwaukee Association of Commerce, with beverages served by Johnny Mo's Bar & Grill.

Live music will be performed from 12:30 to 9 p.m., followed by fireworks at 9:30 p.m.
