The basics: Your guide to getting around town

It doesn't matter whether you just moved into Bay View or whether you're a lifetime resident, here's your guide to just about everything you need to know about living in the city.

How do I change the address on my driver's license?

You can do this over the phone, through the mail or in person at the nearest state Department of Motor Vehicle location. The nearest DMV office is located at 2701 S. Chase Ave. in Milwaukee. If you'd rather do it via the mail or phone, you can get the details at the DMV's Web site.

How do I change my address with the Postal Service?

You can do this in person at the Bay View Post Office, 1603 E. Oklahoma Ave., or you can do it online at the Postal Service's Web site.

How do I register children for school?

To begin the enrollment process in the Milwaukee School District, the student's parent/guardian should go to the nearest school. If you have questions about school registration, call call (414) 475-8448 or visit the Milwaukee Public School District's Web site for more information.

When is the trash picked up?

Garbage from households is picked up weekly. Put garbage in a paper or plastic bag, close the top of the bag and put it in the garbage cart. If you have more garbage than fits in the cart, put it in a plastic bag next to the cart. Carts must be rolled to the street in the morning and returned to storage areas in the evening. Where is City Hall? What are the hours?

City Hall is located at 200 E. Wells. It's open from 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Who are my local elected officials? How can I reach them?

Milwaukee's mayor is Tom Barrett. The Common Council consists of 15 alderpersons. Bay View's alderman is Tony Zielinski. Click here for phone numbers and email address for all city officials.

Where is the local library? What are the library hours?

The Bay View branch of the Milwaukee Public Library is located at 2566 S. Kinnickinnic Ave. Call (414) 481-7323 for more information. Hours are Monday through Thursday, 10:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Tippecanoe library is located at 3912 S. Howell Ave. Hours are Monday to Wednesday, 12:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Thursday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. from September to May. How do I register to vote? Where do I vote?

You can register at the City Clerk's office at City Hall, 200 E. Wells St., Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. In addition, you may register at the polling place on the day of the election, provided you have proper identification. Where can I learn more about merchants and shopping in Bay View?

Bay View has experienced a renaissance in recent years. The neighborhood along Lake Michigan has welcomed many new establishments, including Harry W.
